EasyJet has announced that the airline will cancel 232 flights from airports across the UK, putting hundreds of family holidays at risk.

The cancellations are likely to affect flights to and from Portugal following a major strike by cabin crew.

This means flights from major hubs such as Glasgow, Manchester, London Gatwick, London and Bristol will be affected.

More than a quarter of all aircraft departing for Portugal will remain grounded between 15 and 17 August.

Some of the airline’s most popular routes – including Lisbon, Porto and Faro – are expected to be affected.

Faro is located on the south coast of the Algarve in Portugal and has become one of the most popular travel destinations for the British in recent years.

In the run-up to the strikes, a total of 27 return flights between Great Britain and Portugal were cancelled.

Previously, the Portuguese newspaper Lusa reported that EasyJet had planned 1,138 flights for this period.

The airline has now announced that only 62 percent of normal flights will be operated during the three-day strike.

Just last month, the Portuguese civil aviation flight crew union appealed to the company’s “common sense” when threatening to strike “so that it can give in to the fair demands of its employees”.

This follows the cabin crew union SNPVAC’s call on Easyjet to “find solutions to avoid possible strike action”.

A spokesman told The Mirror: “We are extremely disappointed by this unnecessary strike, particularly at this important time of year for our customers.”

“Our priority was to minimise the impact of this strike on our customers, including cancelling some flights early to give them the opportunity to rearrange their travel plans.

“Customers whose flights were affected were contacted a few days ago and informed of their options for rebooking or refunds.

“We also recommend that customers travelling to or from Portugal on 15, 16 and 17 August check the status of their flights on easyJet Flight Tracker.”

This is an evolving story.
