Ryan Lowe has left Preston North End by mutual consent just one game into the new Championship season.
A statement from Preston said: “Following the discussions on Sunday 11 August, there was mutual agreement that now was the right time for a change.”
Lowe leaves the club after Preston lost 2-0 at home to Sheffield United on Friday night.
“As you are aware, my time at Preston North End has obviously come to an end,” former Bury and Plymouth head coach Lowe said in a statement.
“I’ve had an incredible two and a half years, met incredible people and coached fantastic players, but I feel like now is the right time to move on.
“I think now is the right time for the club to take a different direction. Since I started here, I have always stressed that if I cannot take the club further, I would hand it over to someone else and that is what I am doing now.”
“I leave the club in a good place with a fantastic squad and wish the football club and everyone associated with it all the best for the future.”
Mike Marsh will be accompanied by Peter Murphy and Ched Evans to referee Preston’s upcoming matches against Sunderland in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, live on Sky Sports+and their league game at Swansea on Saturday.
The club says future “agreements” will be announced next week.
Lowe was appointed in December 2021 and led the club to 13th, 12th and 10th place finishes during his two-and-a-half seasons in charge.
Preston finished last season with a five-game losing streak in which they failed to score a goal.
After the opening weekend of the season, Preston are in 23rd place in the championship table, ahead only of Plymouth Argyle.
