Five organisations will receive a share of contracts worth up to £1.3 billion to ensure the safety and reliability of Scotland’s railways over the next five years.
Network Rail announced the contracts as part of the new Scotland Civils Framework – a lot-based agreement between the company and each of the contractors.
Taziker Industrial, AmcoGiffen, STORY and QTS have been awarded the contract, while VolkerRail receives its first major order from Scotland’s railway.
The contracts will finance construction, civil engineering, structural, earthworks, drainage, renovation and improvement projects across the country.
These include:
- Lot A – minor civil works up to £150 million to Taziker Industrial
- Lot B – Buildings and Civil Engineering up to £730m to AmcoGiffen and Story
- Lot C – Geotechnical and minor civil engineering works up to £420 million to QTS
VolkerRail, which regularly completes projects on the network in England and Wales, will carry out signalling, power and communications works worth up to £150 million.
The contracts each have a term of five years with the option of a performance-related extension of three years.
Liam Sumpter, Managing Director of Network Rail Scotland, said: “We are investing up to £1.3 billion in these framework agreements to maintain and improve our infrastructure across Scotland.
“The award of these contracts will help us continue to provide a railway that is safe and reliable for passengers and freight.
“We are delighted to be working with Taziker, AmcoGiffen, STORY and QTS again and look forward to welcoming VolkerRail to the Scottish railway family.”
Niall McCreanor, Director of Specialised Business at VolkerRail, said: “VolkerRail has extensive experience in signalling, telecommunications and power supply, renewal and improvement. We have spent a lot of time developing our presence in Scotland to better understand the needs of the Scottish railway and ensure we can provide the best possible service.”
“We look forward to working with Network Rail and Scotland’s Railway to deliver efficient outcomes in line with their key strategic themes.”
Andy Steel, Managing Director of QTS Group, said: “As the existing contractor for this framework, QTS is delighted to continue to work with the Network Rail team to undertake the geotechnical and minor civil engineering works for the duration of the next control period.
“Through CP6, our team has done exceptional work helping to create efficiencies that have kept Scotland’s railways running. We look forward to continuing this over the next five years and beyond.”
John MacArthur, Managing Director of STORY Scotland, said: “We are delighted that Network Rail has appointed us to support them in delivering their next portfolio of projects to improve Scotland’s rail network.
“This is a great testament to the hard work of everyone on Team STORY and our fantastic supply chain over the last five years and we look forward to working with them to continue to deliver high quality, safe projects on time and on budget.
“We also look forward to recruiting the next generation of our apprentices and graduates and working with local people and businesses to ensure our work leaves a positive and lasting legacy in all our communities.”
Stephen Campbell, Operations Manager at AmcoGiffen, said: “We are delighted to be part of the new five-year contract to deliver the new Scotland Civils Framework for Scottish Railways and are building on our successful working relationship throughout Control Period 6.
“Our commitment to excellence will ensure we continue to deliver safe, reliable and efficient rail services. We look forward to strengthening our relationship with Scotland’s railways and working as a team with new and existing partners to create the best railway for Scotland.”
Notes for editors
In the next five years:
- Taziker will undertake general civil engineering rehabilitation projects including preventative structural repairs and culvert renewals. This includes the completion of metal repairs and scour protection on the Findhorn Viaduct on the Aberdeen – Inverness route in 2027. This will ensure future resilience to climate change and the risk of flood-related scour problems.
- Story and AmcoGiffen will undertake extensive structural renewal works to structures such as tunnels, underpasses and sea walls. This includes AmcoGiffen inspecting and repairing 6km of sea defences between Kincardine and Torryburn along the River Forth. Story will also undertake a scour protection scheme at the Fillan Viaduct on the West Highland Line.
- QTS will undertake vital geotechnical renewal and rehabilitation works and drainage works to improve the condition of these assets whilst countering the impacts of climate change. The works include earthworks and track drainage improvements near Cumbernauld and on- and off-track track drainage improvements on the PMT line near Falkirk.
About Network Rail
We own, operate and develop Britain’s rail infrastructure; that’s 20,000 miles of track, 30,000 bridges, tunnels and viaducts, and thousands of signals, level crossings and stations. We operate 20 of the UK’s largest stations, while all the others, over 2,500, are operated by the country’s railway companies.
Normally, nearly five million journeys are made in the UK and over 600 freight trains run on the network. People rely on Britain’s railways to get to work every day, visit friends and family and get them home safely every day. Our job is to ensure a safe and reliable railway, so we manage and deliver thousands of projects every year as part of the multi-billion pound Railway Modernisation Plan to upgrade and expand the country’s rail network to meet the huge growth and demand the railway has experienced – a doubling of passenger journeys in the last 20 years.
