When most of us think of a cruise ship, we dream of a circumnavigation of the world with breathtaking ocean views, top-deck pools, countless restaurants, bars and cabins – but operating such magnificent ships is no easy task.
Recently, a video went viral showing what it’s really like on a cruise ship during a storm. When a storm threatens a cruise ship, the captain and crew will do everything they can to protect the ship and the people on board. Although cruise ships can usually “escape” most storms, passengers can still contend with rough seas, says Cruise Critic.
TikTok user Days Out Worldwide, who frequently shares cruise and vacation tips, recently showed what a ship’s swimming pool looks like during a storm. Although it is covered with a net, the force of the high winds causes the pool’s overflow onto the deck to “crazy,” meaning that swimming in the pool is prohibited.
The user said: “Did you know that when the sea is rough on a cruise you can’t go in the swimming pool? See how rough it gets, the ending is insane.”
Thousands of people rushed to comment. One said: “All I see is a fun wave pool.” Another added: “On a cruise we could swim and it was so much fun.” And someone wrote: “I was on a cruise as a kid and the waves from the pool reached the second floor.”
Several people pointed out that the net was not helping much. “The net is not a net,” said one. Another added: “What is the net for? The water is running through it.”
However, one viewer noted: “I assume the net is to protect you from drowning in the pool, but there is a greater risk of getting entangled in it.”
Days Out Worldwide previously said that on a cruise the sky gets “so dark” at night that you can’t see anything.
They also stated: “Did you know that when you are on a cruise and the sea is rough during the day or at night and it feels like the ship is rocking up and down and back and forth, the ship is actually still sailing on the water?”
A spokesperson for the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said: “For the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and its members, the safety of guests and crew is a top priority and fundamental to their operations. Even with an increase in cruise capacity, cruise lines have maintained an exceptional safety record – making cruising one of the safest ways to travel. In fact, cruising is safer than virtually any other form of travel.”
