Fallout: London becomes GOG’s “fastest redeemed” game of all time

About two weeks after the release of Fallout: London, the major Fallout 4 mod that brings the post-apocalyptic RPG overseas, digital distribution store GOG.com announced that the expansion-sized mod had become the “fastest redeemed game ever” on its platform.

In a press release released Friday, GOG announced that Fallout: London was downloaded “more than 500,000 times” in its first 24 hours, making it the fastest-downloaded game ever for its storefront alone.

“The initial release of Fallout: London quickly proved to be an incredible success – and a prime example of how passionate and creative work can produce a wealth of new, exciting ways to enjoy a game,” GOG wrote in a press release.

In fact, this success was so great that the mod’s developers announced in an interview with the BBC that they officially plan to start their own game development studio. Although Fallout: London is a free mod, as Dean Carter of Team Folon said in the interview, “offering it for free doesn’t pay the bills.” The developers have been accepting donations and seem to be preparing to use those funds to turn Team Folon into a full-fledged studio.

“We put that into Team Folon, which we will now integrate into, and then hopefully we should start our own indie game company,” he said.

Fallout: London was originally announced in June 2021 as a DLC-sized mod for the 2015 action RPG Fallout 4. The mod is set between the events of Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 and lets players roam through an irradiated, post-apocalyptic London.

Prior to the mod’s release, the Fallout: London development team originally had two additional release windows for the project: the first was in Q3 2023, but was pushed back to avoid competing with Bethesda’s space RPG Starfield. The second delay came in 2024 because the development team was concerned that the next-gen update for Fallout 4 would make the mod unplayable.

Of course, although Fallout: London was a huge success, GOG also mentioned the teething issues that came with the mod, specifically pointing out that most of the issues were due to the complexity of installing the mod for individuals.

Other issues/criticisms with Fallout: London include the mod’s incompatibility with the Epic Games Store version of Fallout 4, which GOG said prior to release was due to EGS’s lack of support for update rollbacks.
